SNACKS & FACTS
TRANSIENTS
- Transient killer whales are opportunists; they prey on marine mammals:
seals, sea lions, porpoises, and small whales.
- Transients are silent when they hunt because they are hunting other marine mammals which can hear their calls. Instead, they listen for their prey and silently approach them. They rarely echolocate.
- Transients swim in erratic patterns and pursue their prey with great speeds.
OFFSHORES
- The third community of whales is the "Offshores".
- Very little is known about this group.
- Scientists believe they feed on schooling fish.
